Watching your teen driver get behind the wheel is never an easy feat. It can be nerve-wracking to even see them in the driver's seat, much less set them free on the roads with no supervision. It can also be worrisome to think about them caring for their own car, especially as they head off to college. Check out this quick guide to teen driver car care to keep them on track even when they're out of your sight.
Five car care tips for teens
Tip #1: Get regular oil changes and check the oil weekly.
It's critical to get routine oil changes for your Orlando Toyota - oil is what keeps the engine cool and lubricated, and without it, your car will quickly overheat or worse (we're talking irreparable engine damage). Tell your teen driver to get regular oil changes as prescribed by their service provider. Also, teach them to check the oil weekly via the dipstick (show them how to verify oil level and quality) so they can stay on top of any problems that might be arising.
Tip #2: Don't ignore weird sounds or smells.
It's super tempting for any driver to just ignore weird sounds and smells, turning the radio and popping another air freshener into place. However, this is never a good idea. Make sure your teen driver knows that they should always address strange smells or noises as soon as they can. They might think they can save money by ignoring them, but this usually just makes the problem bigger and more expensive.
Tip #3: Don't let your car tires get worn down.
It's easy to ignore worn-down car tires (especially when you realize it's not that cheap to replace tires). However, this is a recipe for both blowouts and car accidents. Make sure your teen driver knows how to identify tires that are both damaged or too low in terms of tread so they can stay safe on the roads.
Tip #4: Listen to the mechanic who advises replacing your air filter.
Air filters need to be replaced. The engine air filter prevents dirt and debris from being sucked up into the engine, and when it gets too dirty, it can negatively impact performance. It may not sound like a necessary auto service, but it is - so make sure your teen driver knows it.
Tip #5: Get brake service.
Teach your teens to recognize the sound of brake trouble (i.e. screeching noises) so they know when to replace brake pads to avoid rotor damage or worse.
