Even if you're not a fan of working on your own car or feel a little nervous when it comes to what goes on under the hood, it's still a good idea to know the basics of car maintenance and auto repairs. Today our Orlando Toyota body shop talking about four auto repairs you should be able to do DIY style from the comfort of your own garage.
Even if you choose to drop your car with us for repairs, it's always helpful to have the know-how should you have a roadside emergency. Here are the four auto repairs we recommend you learn how to do on your own.
Four auto repairs you should be able to DIY
#1: Change a tire. This auto repair is a big one - what happens if you get stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and your roadside assistance can't get to you right away? When you get a flat, pull off the road to a spot that's flat, even, and sand-free. Jack your car up, loosen the lug nuts, and pull off the old tire. Replace it with the spare tire and replace the lug nuts, making sure they're nice and tight. Voila! When you're done, head to Toyota of Orlando to get a new tire (you can't go far or fast on a spare).
#2: Change your oil. It's also a good idea to at least know how to change your oil even if you choose to schedule this auto repair with us on the regular. To do this DIY style, you'll need an oil pan, a wrench, and new oil. All you have to do is place the oil pan under your car to catch the old oil, loosen the oil plug, and let the dirty oil drain out. Replace the oil filter with a new one, put the plug back in, and add new oil. And remember to dispose of the old oil properly - you can't just dump it down the drain or in the trash.
#3: Change a headlight. What will you do if a headlight burns out when you're away from home? Did you know you can get a ticket for driving with a burnt-out bulb? It's in your best interest to know how to do this DIY auto repair (and it's usually pretty easy). Find the right bulb for your car and the spot where it needs to go (headlight vs taillight, etc.). You'll go through the engine compartment to access the headlight, pull the old bulb out, and replace it with a new one. Be careful not to touch the glass of the bulb with your fingers.
#4: Change your windshield wiper blades. Changing your windshield wiper blades is a quick and easy process and something you can definitely DIY. Ask our Orlando Toyota parts specialists which ones are best for your ride. After you've bought them, lift your wipers away from your windshield, lift the tab to release the old blades, and slide the new ones in. Push the tab down and test them out - you should be good to go!
