Five tips for caring for a high mileage car

Is your car starting to get up there in years or miles? It can be a little unnerving to see the odometer creep into the six-digit range, but it doesn't mean your car is on its last legs (especially if you drive an Orlando Toyota). A high mileage car can be just as reliable as a new car if you care for it properly. Check out these quick tips from our auto service experts at Toyota of Orlando and keep your high mileage car in the best shape possible.

Toyota of Orlando tips

How can you care for your high mileage car?

Tip #1: Stay on top of a recommended maintenance schedule. You should stick to a routine car maintenance schedule no matter how old your car is, but it's especially important in a high mileage car. This means getting routine oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, tuneups - whatever your Orlando Toyota service tech recommends to keep your car in the best shape possible. Don't deviate from the schedule, and ask your tech about products specific to high mileage cars (like specific motor oil, etc.).

Tip #2: Don't put off repairs. If you notice an issue developing, don't ignore it. We know that sometimes it's tempting to turn up the music and pretend you don't hear that weird sound, but you'll really do yourself more harm. Leaving small issues to fester can quickly turn them into much larger (and more expensive) issues down the road. Schedule repairs and get them over with to pay less in the long run.

Tip #3: Detail it regularly. Another great way to keep your high mileage car in the best shape is to detail it regularly. Vacuum and wipe the interior, clean the windows, and wash the exterior on the regular. You should also invest in a quality wax to protect the paint and keep it in excellent condition.

Tip #4: Don't drive aggressively. Sounds weird, but driving aggressively can actually do significant damage to your high mileage car over time. It puts more wear and tear than usual on your vehicle. Accelerate and brake gently, and don't whip your car around turns or race over speed bumps. Your engine, brakes, and suspension will thank you!

Tip #5: Keep an eye on belts and hoses. Keep a close eye on things under the hood; in particular, the belts and hoses. These wear out over time no matter why type of car you drive and will need to be replaced. If you see one of them looking a little worse for the wear, let our Orlando Toyota service center replace it for you to keep your car up and running.
