How to make your car paint last longer

Updated: Aug 26, 2021

When caring for your car, it may seem like you really just need to be diligent about keeping up with what's under the hood to keep the value high. This couldn't be further from the truth, however - you actually need to take care of everything from bumper to bumper. And remember, first impressions count... which is why we're here to give you tips on how to make your car paint stay like-new as long as possible. Check out these expert tips from our Orlando Toyota body shop techs!

Toyota car paint tips
  1. Wash regularly. If you want your car paint to last a long time, you need to get into a routine when it comes to washing your ride. Dirt, grime, bird poop, dead bugs, and other environmental factors can do a number on your car paint, especially if you leave them on for too long. You should also ensure you're using the right products to wash; using things like dish soap or hair conditioner can actually damage the paint over time. Shop our Orlando Toyota parts store for supplies!

  2. Hand dry your car. Hand drying your car after you wash it will ensure that you don't get water spots on it. The water spots you get from air drying usually leave mineral deposits that can fade the car paint over time. Use a soft, clean towel to dry.

  3. Invest in a quality wax. Wax plays a HUGE role in car paint protection and making it last longer. You don't have to spend a ton of money on an expensive product; choose something mid-grade and apply it regularly to protect your car from the sun, grime, dirt, dust, and other pollutants that can damage its look.

  4. Consider ceramic coating. If you're serious about paint protection and making it last a long time, you may want to consider ceramic coating. It's kind of like a premium version of car wax, and it's hydrophobic so it repels water and mud and makes washing your car a lot easier. It's also a lot more durable and long-lasting than wax.

  5. Park under cover as often as you can. Find natural protection for your car as much as you can - park it under cover. A garage is obviously ideal, but a carport or covered parking space is also great. Even parking under trees can help make your paint last; just know that trees will drop pollen, sap, dirt, and other debris on your car so you'll have to keep up with your car washing.

  6. Think about getting a car cover. If your car tends to be outside a lot in the sun, you may want to invest in a car cover. This fabric cover will ward off the sun, rain, snow, wind, and more to offer superior protection for your car's exterior.
