Prep your car for hurricane season

It may only be April, but May is right around the corner and that means the start of hurricane season here in Orlando. It's time to start pulling together your emergency supplies, having bottled water on hand, and making sure your house is ready to take on storm season. However, that's not all you should do to prep - make sure your car is also ready for hurricane season with these easy Orlando Toyota tips.

Toyota of Orlando tips

Tip #1: Get all of your auto service squared away. When was the last time you had a tire rotation or an oil change? If you're not already on an auto service schedule, you should get on one now. The last thing you need is a flat tire or overheated engine should you need to evacuate the City Beautiful. Let our Orlando car care specialists help you get on and stick to a routine for your car care.

Tip #2: Have a photoshoot. Now is also the time to take pictures of your car inside and out. This is for insurance purposes - if your vehicle is damaged in the storm, you need photos to show that it was in good condition beforehand.

Tip #3: Check your car insurance policy. Speaking of car insurance, when's the last time you checked your policy? Make sure that yours does cover hurricane damage (it should if you have comprehensive coverage on your policy) and if it doesn't, consider adding it before hurricane season arrives.

Tip #4: Stock your ride. You should put some of the necessities in your car before hurricane season arrives so that if you do need to get out of town ahead of a storm, your Orlando Toyota is ready. Make sure you have a charging cord for your devices and a paper map just in case you can't get service on your phone. You should also check to make sure you have a tire changing kit (spare, tire jack, lug wrench, and tire pressure gauge) as well as supplies like jumper cables, a can of Fix-a-flat, and a spare quart of oil. This way, if you face a car care emergency on the way out of town, you're ready for it.

Tip #5: Pick a parking space. Have a plan in place before hurricane season arrives. If we get a storm and you plan to stay and ride it out, where will you park your Orlando Toyota? Covered and enclosed parking (like a garage) is best, but any covered parking is better than leaving it out in the open. You could even leave it in a parking garage if it comes to it. Also, remember to park away from trees and power lines, and if you live in a flood zone, move your car to higher ground before the storm arrives.

And it goes without saying - when hurricane season arrives, try to keep your car gassed up so you're not stuck waiting in line at the gas station right before the storm hits!
