Six things you should know about car parts

When it comes to car parts - fixing them, shopping for them, upgrading them, installing them - how solid are you on knowledge? If you're not well-versed in car parts, then it can be stressful and even a little scary to shop for new ones or repair the ones in your vehicle. Toyota of Orlando is here to help - check out these six basic things you should know about car parts to get you started.

Toyota of Orlando tips

  1. OEM parts are from the manufacturer. OEM stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer" so if you buy OEM parts for your Toyota, they'll come from Toyota and Toyota only. These parts are made specifically for the models found within that make.

  2. You can buy OEM parts at our Orlando Toyota dealership OR on our website. If we don't have them in stock right now, you can have them shipped to the dealership and come by to pick them up. Our parts specialists can also chat with you if you have any questions.

  3. Aftermarket parts aren't made by the OEM. These parts are (for the most part) designed to be used in your particular vehicle, but they're made by another company. However, before you start using aftermarket car parts in your Orlando Toyota, check your warranties and lease agreements to ensure that using an aftermarket part won't void anything or cause you trouble down the road.

  4. You can buy aftermarket parts... well, pretty much anywhere. You can find these car parts at auto parts stores and online - there's generally a big selection available. Just shop carefully and make sure what you buy is quality.

  5. We don't think it's a great idea to put used car parts in your vehicle. We're being frank, and here's our reasoning: used parts are USED. This means they've been through wear and tear on another vehicle. This also means you don't know if they were well-maintained or well-cared for. This puts a level of uncertainty into your drive time because you don't really know how reliable the part is or when it's going to conk out on you.

  6. You can't just throw car parts in the garbage when you're done with them. You can try to sell them as used parts or for scrap metal, or find a place to recycle them.
