How to prep your car for a road trip

Are you thinking about hitting the open road this summer for a getaway? Whether you're taking a long weekend or heading cross-country, it's a good idea to prep your car for a road trip BEFORE you get out of town. Here are some quick tips from our Orlando auto service experts on how you can get ready to hit the highway.

car maintenance for highway driving

Six things to do before your road trip

Tip #1: Check your tires. Have our Orlando Toyota service team check your car's tires before you head out - the last thing you want is a flat or a blowout. Have them do an inspection and if necessary, rotate your tires, align your wheels, or replace any tires that are on their last legs.

Tip #2: Have your fluids checked. Your car has to work overtime when you're out on the highway, and this is especially true in the heat of the summer. Make sure you're good to go on fluids like oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, etc. - our techs can check each and every one of them to ensure they're full and clean so your car can stay cool no matter how far your travels take you.

Tip #3: Get a battery inspection. Ask our Orlando Toyota techs to check your battery. Don't get stuck with a dead car - have them check the physical condition for any swelling, leaks, or rust, and also have them do a voltage test to ensure it's got enough life left in it to hit the open road (and make it back from your road trip, too). Replace if necessary!

Tip #4: Make sure your brakes are in top shape. If you've noticed anything out of the ordinary when it comes to your car brakes, NOW is the time to get it handled. If you hear squealing or feel vibrations when you push the brake pedal, you need service now. It doesn't hurt to have our Orlando Toyota service techs check your brake pads to ensure they don't need to be replaced before you head out on your road trip.

Tip #5: Know before you tow. If you're planning on towing, do your due diligence when it comes to research before you leave. Make sure your car can handle the weight you're planning to pull, and then make sure you're hooking up your tow correctly AND have working brake lights and turn signals on it. Our auto service techs can help. Same goes for roof racks - don't just install on a whim and call it a day! This can lead to you losing your luggage or even more seriously, an accident.

Tip #6: Do a quick check of lights and wipers. Before you leave, make sure your headlights, taillights, turn signals, interior lights, and windshield wipers are all in the best condition. You'll likely be driving at night at some point and you never know when bad weather will pop up on a road trip, so it's best to be prepared.
