Seven weird - but common - driving superstitions

Do you have any superstitions that you just HAVE to follow when you're behind the wheel of your Orlando Toyota? If you do, you're not alone - believe it or not, there's actually a large number of driving superstitions out there that stem from and are practiced all over the world. Today we're discussing seven of the common ones we've seen in honor of Friday the 13th... which will you put into play next time you get behind the wheel?

friday the 13th

Superstition #1: Pick your feet up when you drive over a railroad track. This is a fairly common driving superstition - lots of people pick up their feet whether driver or passenger. Why? It's believed that if you don't, you'll never find your true love, never marry, and could possibly even die young.

Superstition #2: Put loose change under the front seat of a new car. Some drivers put some loose change under the front seat of their new car; it's supposed to bring good luck to you when you get behind the wheel and help prevent car accidents.

Superstition #3: Scratch your new car yourself. Another weird driving superstition is that you should scratch your car yourself before anything or anyone else can do it. Supposedly, this self-inflicted scratch will help prevent car accidents, collisions, and other damage. (Maybe do it in an out-of-the-way spot, or book an appointment at our Orlando Toyota Collision Center to get it fixed afterward.)

Superstition #4: Hold your breath and hide your thumbs when you go past a graveyard. These are actually two separate driving superstitions. Some drivers believe that you should hold your breath when passing a graveyard because the ghosts that reside there - that are no longer breathing - will be jealous of your ability to breathe and will steal your breath from you. In Japan, it's believed that you should hide your thumbs when you pass a funeral or funeral procession because evil spirits lingering by caskets will possess you, entering your body under your thumbnail.

Superstition #5: Honk when you drive into a tunnel. It's also a driving superstition that you should honk when you enter a tunnel to scare off any evil spirits that may cause harm to you when you enter the tunnel.

Superstition #6: Tap the roof when you drive through a yellow light. LOTS of drivers do this - when you drive through a yellow (amber) light, you tap the roof of your car or the sun visor. Why? Apparently, it's a quick way to say thank you to the forces at play that you didn't get pulled over or hit by another car.

Superstition #7: Never talk about selling your car while inside of it. In Russia, it's considered really bad luck to talk about selling your car while you're sitting inside of it. Why? Because the car will "hear" you, be resentful that you're about to get rid of it, and subsequently start to malfunction and break before you can get rid of it.
